As I am currently trying to find just one person
who wants to run a site with this software, with the idea of mutual support, I thought I should give a bit of an overview of the software. This post will act as a way to point out the features, how each feature can be customized, and how this specific site is configured.
I don't know that I'll be able to get everything out at once, so this may get updated over time. Actually, it definitely will get updated as new features/tweaks/sections get added or updated. I will probably skip most obvious elements, specific fields that should be self explanatory. I will be focus mostly (in most cases) on what can be changed.
I created my own CAPTCHA. It's not great, but seems to work decently enough. The image it creates will use all letters of the alphabet, and numbers 2-9. I left out 0 and 1 simply because of how similar they are to some letters. The only thing that can really be customized here is simply whether or not you use it, and where you use it.
User Registration is a multi step process. How many steps there are will depend on how the site is configured, but there will be at the bare minimum of 2 main steps; filling out the form, then confirming the information you entered to make sure you filled everything out correctly, and that you are happy with the information provided.
For my site here, upon confirming your registration information, you will be sent an email with a verification link so that your email address can be verified. This link can be resent if the first email does not get to you. You MUST verify your email address by clicking that link to create your account.
Alternatively, an admin can actually review all pending accounts (accounts where an email has been sent out but that link has not been clicked) and either manually accept or reject those accounts.
When an Admin views a pending validation, they will be able to see if the email address has or has not been verified. This will be important if you choose to require Admin Validation (see bellow).
Various customization for registration are as follows:
-CAPTCHA requirement on/off
-Email Validation yes/no
-Admin Validation yes/no
--If you require Admin Validation, ALL accounts must be approved by an admin regardless of email validation
If you set it up so that Email Address do not need to be validated, and Admins do NOT have to accept registrations, then all accounts will be created instantly upon verifying your entered data.
The only thing I can think of that can be customized here, as far as I can remember, is with the CAPTCHA system. You can set it to require CAPTCHA validation after (x) failed attempts. Then you can lock the account temporarily after (x) more failures. This does need work however.
Blogs can be enabled or disabled.

Honestly, this is already becoming tedious lol. There is actually a tremendous amount of customization that can be done throughout the site. Most sections can be enabled or disabled. You can change the amount of posts per page (Blogs, Comments, Forum Topics, Polls, etc). If categories are used, you can create/edit/delete them, or disabled them all together.
